buk Solutions speaks the language of top interpreters’ conference course

Dozens of experienced interpreters met in historic Cambridge for the annual Cambridge Conference Interpretation Course, made possible with help from buk Solutions.

The leading audio-visual technology provider supported and supplied the crucial technology for the event that saw internationally known language experts converge at the Cambridge Hilton.

They were there for a unique specialised training course, which is designed specifically for experienced practising conference interpreters. This top-class not-for-profit event is a high-level continuing professional development course for the participants.

It’s run by Cambridge alumnus and a Senior Interpreter at an international organisation near Brussels, Christopher Guichot de Fortis, and freelance interpreter Julia Poger, both members of the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC). They have been running the globally recognised course together since 2002.

It has been a permanent fixture in the calendar since 1985 and buk Solutions has provided the conference with equipment including monitors, microphones, headsets, and receivers for 20 years.

The firm’s technology enables delegates to communicate via buk’s ‘push-to-talk’ discussion microphones. It also supplies digital dual-interpreter work stations and multiple booths for interpreters to work from.

Christopher said: “Once again we have been impressed with buk’s speed, efficiency and responsiveness this summer. One can never be certain what problems may arise, and the technicians were always there when we needed them.”

Steve Hunt, Operations Manager at buk Solutions, said: “It has been great to have been chosen to support this event during another hot British summer.

“Christopher and Julia have so many years of experience in running this course and it is hugely pleasing to be part of the furniture in providing the technology backbone to them.”

Julia Poger, who has been working as an interpreter since 1986, said: “It is lovely to work with someone who knows us and our needs so well that they can be proactive in offering us the right solution at the right price. It is great to know that the tech for the course is in such reliable and helpful hands!”

In any environment, whether it be at a conference, board room or court room, it is essential that those in the space can see the person who is speaking. In these scenarios, the most practical method of tracking the speaker is to direct the camera to the microphone location using camera control software.
