University of Bath invest in new technology to train MA interpreting students

The University of Bath has invested in new technology to help interpreting suites which incorporate the Congress Delegate Virtual Audio Network (CDSVAN) System, widely used by professional interpreters worldwide.

CDSVAN is a computer controlled, digital sound processing system. It is the first conference system with an open architecture which allows the University to design and build its sound system on screen, on site and in real time.

The University of Bath has over 70 students across its Chinese and European streams and has been training interpreters and translators for over 50 years. Many of its graduates can be found working in the profession around the world. Its MA Interpreting & Translation programme is designed to train linguists for careers as professional interpreters and translators.

Students are supported by a friendly team of qualified and experienced staff, and now have use of an internationally acclaimed industry standard system that is used in the real world of interpreting. The new system will enable students to feel confident when they move into a work environment. The CDSVAN systems were skillfully installed and commissioned at Bath by Reflex AV who also provided the necessary Audio Visual Integration to complement the advanced features of the Brähler systems.

By using CDS-VAN over 50% of the hardware required for a standard sound processing system can be removed. The whole system works without any audio compression and thus offers studio quality for all language channels, as well as the ability to record the audio directly to the hard drive. These features make the system ideal for schools, colleges and universities, helping people to learn by listening back to lectures and work.
